AIMS OF THE PRE-SCHOOL
We aim to help your child work towards attaining the Early Learning Goals set out by OFSTED. Some of the aims of each of these areas are:
PERSONAL, SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
To be interested, excited and motivated to learn. Be confident to try new activities, initiate ideas and speak in a familiar group. Work as part of a group or class, taking turns and sharing fairly, understanding that there needs to be agreed values and codes of behaviour for groups of people, including adults and children to work together harmoniously. To understand what is right and wrong and why! And to respect other people’s needs, views, cultures and beliefs.
COMMUNICATION & LANGUAGE
To enjoy listening to and using spoken and written language and be able to readily use it in their play and interaction with others. To respond to stories, songs, music, rhymes and poems and make up their own stories.
To use small and gross physical development. Children are able to move freely with confidence through a range of ways skillfully and negotiate space.
Children can handle equipment and tools effectively which includes pencil control for mark making and writing.
Children understand the importance of good health of physical development, are able to keep safe and healthy. They are able to manage their own personal needs successfully.
UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD
To ask questions about why things happen and how they work. Find out about past and present events in their own lives, and in those of their families and other people they know. Begin to know about their own cultures and beliefs and those of people around them. Children are able to observe plants and animals are able to explain why change. That Teddy Bears children have range of access to a range of ICT equipment.
Children enjoy access to a wide range of literacy through our books
Children read and understand simple words, sentence in the environment and demonstrate understanding when communicating with others. Children use phonic knowledge when sounding or spelling words correctly. Attempt to write their own names and other such things such as labels and captions and begin to form simple sentences, and some punctuation.
Children can recognise and count numbers throughout their play and start to show understanding of number and names in order, in familiar contexts. To be able to solve practical problems. To be able to use ‘greater’ and ‘smaller’ to compare quantities. To learn how to problem solve, understand shape, size, weight, position and patterns.
EXPRESSIVE ARTS & DESIGN
To be able to explore colour, texture, shape and form. To recognise and develop how sounds can be changed. To sing simple songs from memory, recognising repeated sounds and match movements to music. Use their imagination in art and design, music, dance and develop these in role-play and stories.
In addition the Teddy Bears Friday morning 3+ sessions put particular emphasis on encouraging children to learn skills in preparation for school. These sessions are of a more constructive nature than the pre-school sessions.
Each child has a ‘Key worker’ assigned to them whose role is to observe and look after them. They are responsible for their welfare, daily activities, play plans, keeping records and maintaining reports. All staff are approachable should you need to discuss your child with any one of them.
We aim to give equal opportunities to all children so that they are able to be themselves and achieve their full potential, regardless of their culture, religious beliefs, ethnic origin, disabilities or special needs.
